The Associated Press contacted Wholesale Furniture Brokers for their view on the rising prices from furniture makers. Dave Zirnhelt, the chief executive of Wholesale Furniture Brokers, was able to contribute to the article that was published in The New York Times on April 16, 2010.

"On a retail level, you don't want to raise prices because it's tough to convince a buyer that what they're getting today is worth it when they paid less yesterday," Zirnhelt said. On the other hand, furniture producers have "got to raise the price at some time or you're digging yourself into a hole."

This year’s Milan Furniture Fair has fewer exhibitors compared to last year. From 2,723, the numbers dropped to 2,499. According to Alice Rawsthorn, a design critic for the New York Times, coming up with something exceptional is getting to be more difficult in the furniture business. One reason cited is the recession. However, the economy is slowly getting back to its feet, though furniture markets in North America and Western Europe continue to suffer from weak demand. Patrizia Moroso of the Italian furniture company Moroso says that there is a more cautious approach to furniture spending.

Because of the recession, manufacturers are exhibiting fewer products and even taking some of their products off the production line. Rawsthorn says that the designs exhibited are not as interesting as in years past.

Ilse Crawford, a British designer said that “design needs to be seen more as a critical process, and less about making things look good.” This means that furniture designers are expected to come up with products that are sustainable and use digital technology in new ways as well as design items that “strike an emotional chord“with consumers.

2009 Online Survey Says More Than Half of Consumer Respondents Want New Furniture

HGTV and Furniture Today launched an online survey in September 2009 in order to analyze the effects of the recession on consumers’ furniture spending habits. The survey enabled consumers to share their opinions about the recession’s effect on their 2009 household spending, furniture and bedding in particular, as well as their furniture buying plans for 2010.

Of the 8,554 consumers who participated in the survey, 19% can afford to buy new furniture at the time of the survey while 22% think they can go furniture shopping this year, 2009. About 30% weren’t sure they have money to spend on new furnishings and 11% said they may be able to afford furniture next year, 2011.

It is heartening to note that more than half of the consumers want new furniture and have plans to make furnishing purchases this year and in 2011, even as the economy is getting back to its feet.

I am feeling a little sick and tired of our dining room table and have decided a pretty tablecloth is a simple and effective way to give it a new look. I have decided on the second one from Anthropologie firstly for the pretty frill and secondly for the lovely mixture of bright colours. Then I can mix my things I have around my house to change its centrepiece every few days or so. Sounds like a very good plan to me xx

A Sydney breakfast continued...

Stupidly I forgot my camera this morning so these were taken on my BB and aren't that clear. Still, they capture Sydney beautifully don't they. Despite being a Sydney girl through and through, I still appreciate the beauty of our harbour.

Breakfast was spent at the Park Hyatt Sydney. And it was possibly the best breakfast I have ever had! I had the most divine fruit, muesli, nuts, bacon, eggs, tomatoes, mushrooms and waffles... Oh and a coffee and fresh apple juice. OK, so I over ate greatly but it was too delicious not to.

My mother insisted on taking a photo of me, so yes, that is me in the second shot, but I'm not a photo person so this is the best she was going to get!!
